In Ontario, a notary public is a person who is appointed by the provincial government to serve the public as an impartial witness when important documents are signed or oaths are recited.

The
Notaries Act provides lawyers with the privilege of becoming a notary public by applying, paying a one-time fee and obtaining a personal seal embosser.

Some of the documents and services that a notary public can handle include:

Affidavits:

  • Family Responsibility Office Affidavit for a Lost Cheque (administering oath)
